Famularo Slams Republicans for Landfill Political Stunt
PLEASANTVILLE -- Joanne Famularo, Pleasantville Councilwoman and Democratic candidate for Atlantic County Commissioner, slams Republican elected officials for their proposal to dissolve the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) and privatize landfill management. The plan was proposed by Commissioner Maureen Kern and her Republican colleagues in a blatant political stunt held just six days before election day.
"It amazes me that all these elected county and legislative officials, including Sen. Vince Polistina and Maureen Kern, would take the time and effort to put together a press conference to propose a plan so close to election day, when so many people have been suffering for months with zero action from them," Famularo said. These folks must know that the ACUA can't be dissolved unless their $22 million bond debt is paid off first by the county. That would require a 12.5% tax increase on Atlantic County residents. Who can afford an extra 12.5% increase on their tax bill?"
"The ACUA isn't just the landfill," said Famularo. "They provide vital environment services like curbside pickup, water treatment, and solid waste disposal. Privatizing all of ACUA because of the landfill odor is like throwing out the baby with the bathwater. It is incredibly short-sighted."
