Fitzpatrick, Coursey Call for a Six-Month Gas Tax Holiday
Atlantic County Commissioners Caren Fitzpatrick & Ernest Coursey today called for federal and state government to institute a six-month gas tax holiday to help Atlantic County families severely impacted by gas prices.
"In a county where the per capita income is only $34,000, the exorbitant gas prices are devastating Atlantic County families," said Fitzpatirck and Coursey. "With crippling inflation, we need to put more money back in people's pockets immediately. That's why we're calling for a six-month gas tax holiday so that we can give families the relief they deserve."
The federal gas tax is 18.3 cents per gallon and the state gas tax is 42.2 cents a gallon, meaning a federal and state gas tax holiday would save motorists approximately 60 cents a gallon. Fitzpatrick and Coursey note that the state government can use federal COVID relief dollars to keep Transportation Trust Fund projects going and to continue making much-needed improvements to our infrastructure while the holiday is in place.
"This is not an 'either/or' scenario. With the windfall of money from the federal government, the State of New Jersey can fund much-needed infrastructure work while at the same time still giving money back to taxpayers," said Fitzpatrick and Coursey.
Fitzpatrick and Coursey are sponsoring a County Commissioner Board resolution supporting this effort. The resolution will be voted on at the next meeting of the Board on Tuesday, July 5.
