Susan Lazarchick is a lifelong resident of Atlantic County. She grew up in Northfield and has lived in the Weymouth section of Hamilton Township for the past 30 years with her husband, Michael. They have one son, Aron, who is living in Portugal with his family. Susan has a Bachelor's degree in Human Services from Thomas Edison State University and has had numerous human services jobs over the years, including establishing the Child Care Resource and Referral program through the Atlantic County Women's Center in the 1980s.Susan’s work history was interrupted when she developed a benign bone tumor. In 1987, she received the first entire knee transplant from an 18 year old killed in a motorcycle accident. Later, in 2006, she had her leg amputated above the knee due to infection. Susan’s health challenges and disabilities have fueled her passion for advocating for those in the amputee coalition. For many years, Susan volunteered as a peer visitor to comfort and assist people going through their own amputations. In the late 2000s, Susan helped spearhead an effort to pass a health care parity law for amputees in New Jersey. Susan has been a strong environmental advocate and has been involved with Sustainable Jersey since 2015 and previously served as Chair for the Hamilton Township Green Team. Susan strongly supports efforts to pursue critical sustainability initiatives and cleaner energy, which will create good-paying jobs and build a healthier, more equitable future for Atlantic County.
